Injectable fillers are effective for improving ‘static’ wrinkles which are visible at rest. Fillers differ from each other in their component material, reversibility, particle size, viscosity, and expected duration of effect. The major benefit of injectable fillers is that, except for minor bruising, they require little or no downtime and most deliver immediate, visible results. Certain characteristics of each filler material may make it more favorable for use in certain areas of the face. Please consult with your doctor to discuss which filler is right for you and your cosmetic goals.

Hyaluronic acid is composed of a naturally occurring substance in the human body.  It is the main component of a number of injectable fillers. There are numerous available injectable fillers made of Hyaluronic acid including: JUVEDERM®, JUVEDERM® XC, Voluma® , RESTYLANE® , RESTYLANE® SILK, RESTYLANE® LIFT, and Belotero. A unique benefit of this class of injectable is that its effects can be reversed and the product can be dissolved if a patient is not happy with the result.

A popular hyaluronic acid filler, Juvederm is FDA approved for injection in the nasolabial folds and lips. In addition, it can also help the appearance of mild to moderate lines in the chin, marionette lines, jowls, and jaw line. Results are expected to last six months or longer.

Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler that can be used to contour and volumize the malar region to create the appearance of higher cheekbones. Results with Voluma may last up to 2 years.

Restylane and Restylane Silk are also made of hyaluronic acid. Restylane is FDA approved for injection in the nasolabial folds. It can also be helpful in improving the appearance of lines around the mouth, tear trough hollows beneath the eyes and enhancement of lips. Restylane injections typically last 6-9 months.

Similar to Restylane and Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft is also a gel made of hyaluronic acid. Restylane Lyft can be used to enhance and contour the cheek bones.

Radiesse is a calcium-based volumizing dermal filler that is used to fill deeper lines, especially in the nasolabial fold region. Radiesse particles are larger than hyaluronic acid. As a result, its effect may be longer lasting (up to 18 months). However, because of the larger particle size, it is not suitable for finer lines or delicate areas such as the lips.

Sculptra is a unique facial injectable product made of poly L lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic biodegradable polymer. PLLA is found in dissolvable sutures that have been used for decades. Sculptra does not act like other dermal fillers; it is a bio activator. Once it is injected, the solution it is suspended in is rapidly absorbed in the body within 1-2 days. The PLLA molecules then work by stimulating the body to produce new collagen at the sites of injection. Over the 6-8 weeks following injection, the body generates new collagen in the area that replaces the lost volume and restores the fullness of youth. At 6-8 weeks, your doctor may recommend an additional treatment. Because Sculptra stimulates the body to produce its own collagen, once full correction is achieved, the results can last up to 2-3 years.
