Neuromodulators

Perhaps the most popular cosmetic procedure, injection of neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport, has helped millions of men and women improve the appearance of facial aging.  Because of its widespread use, it is easy to forget that injection of neuromodulators is a medical treatment that must be administered carefully by a licensed medical professional who understands the nuances of the underlying facial muscles actions and the appropriate preparation and application of the injectable medication to improve the appearance of wrinkles.

Neuromodulators are a class of injectable products that can temporarily (for three to six months) relax overactive muscles and soften the appearance of certain wrinkles. Neuromodulators block the nerve impulses that enable the muscle contractions responsible for creating expression lines on the face. They can smooth existing lines and may prevent expression lines from forming. These medications have been tested in clinical trials and are FDA approved to relax the deep creases between the eyebrows. These injections are an effective technique for combating external signs of aging, such as wrinkles, from repetitive muscle actions created by facial expression. The result is a relaxed and softened appearance and thus reduction in wrinkle visibility.

Neuromodulators can be used to treat such areas as:

  • Frown lines (the 11’s)
  • Horizontal forehead creases
  • Crow’s feet
  • Lip lines
  • Chin dimpling
  • Overactive neck muscles (platysmal banding)

BOTOX

Botox injections typically only take a few minutes and do not require anesthesia. Results can take as many as seven days before the full benefit is visible and lasts approximately three to six months. Effects become more substantial over time as the process is repeated.

DYSPORT

Dysport is similar to Botox in its purpose and delivery. Both are derived from Botulinum toxin type A proteins and last approximately three to six months. Dysport has the advantage of a quicker onset time.  Please consult your doctor to discuss which option best addresses your goals.
