Inspire® Therapy for Sleep Apnea

A CPAP alternative for obstructive sleep apnea

If you have obstructive sleep apnea and struggle to tolerate CPAP therapy, Inspire® therapy may offer a new option for better sleep and better health.

Inspire therapy is an advanced treatment that works inside the body with your natural breathing process to keep your airway open during sleep. Instead of using a mask or hose, the Inspire system uses a small implant and handheld remote to help you breathe normally throughout the night.

Understanding Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, preventing normal breathing. These interruptions can happen dozens or even hundreds of times each night.

Common signs of OSA include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Morning headaches
  • Poor concentration
  • Interrupted sleep

What Is Inspire Therapy?

Inspire therapy is an FDA-approved treatment for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The system is a small implanted device that monitors your breathing while you sleep and delivers gentle stimulation to key airway muscles.

This stimulation moves the tongue slightly forward and helps keep the airway open, allowing you to breathe normally throughout the night.

Unlike CPAP therapy, Inspire:

  • Works inside the body
  • Requires no mask or tubing
  • Is controlled with a small handheld remote
  • Activates only when you sleep

How Inspire Therapy Works

Small Implantable Device

Placed beneath the skin in the upper chest, this device monitors your breathing patterns.

Breathing Sensor

Detects each breath you take during sleep.

Stimulation Lead

Delivers gentle impulses to the nerve that controls tongue movement, helping keep the airway open.

What It’s Like to Use Inspire

Before going to sleep, you simply turn the device on with a small handheld remote. The system works automatically while you sleep and can be turned off when you wake up.

  1. Turn Inspire on before bed with the remote
  2. The system monitors your breathing
  3. Gentle stimulation helps keep the airway open
  4. Turn it off when you wake up

What to Expect From the Inspire Procedure

The procedure involves:

  • Placing a small device beneath the skin of the chest
  • Positioning two thin leads that monitor breathing and stimulate airway muscles
  • Making several small incisions for implantation

Most patients go home the same day and resume normal activities soon after surgery. After healing, the device is activated and programmed to your individual breathing patterns.
